Amidst the public outcry and rage surrounding the much publicised gang rape and resulting murder of a young Delhi woman and the battery of her male friend last December, a number of questions are being asked by swathes of the general public, not to mention the intelligentsia, women's groups, activists, and international commentators about India's social fabric and, importantly, the place and status of women in it. 

But is the establishment of the first all-women police station in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh really a step forward?
